New Uses for Quizlet

“WHAAAA????!!! Why didn’t I think of this years ago!”  Those were my thoughts when I realized some genius new uses for Quizlet.

1. Make Sentence Strips Easy!

I love using physical, paper strips in my class for activities.  Sometimes students match English and Spanish (i.e. words, sentences, questions and answers) other times they put strips in a logical order (i.e. story, times, routine, directions around town to arrive to a set destination). I’ve always made these strips in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.  Today it dawned on me that Quizlet will do this for me! Anything that makes my teacher life easier is a win!

  1. Create a Quizlet set with your desired content. (Bonus: Outside of class students can study the Quizlet set! You can re-purpose it as a Quizlet Live too!)
  2. Select the “Print” option

3. Choose “Small” for your layout. Make sure “Double-side printing” is unchecked. Open as a PDF and save for printing!

Select these options.

I like to color code my sets when I’m printing multiple copies so when they get mixed up, it’s easy to sort them.  Cut out and use!

The one draw back is the inconsistent font size.  I don’t love that because it tips students off to matches. I do love that all the sentence strips are the same length and width.

2. Diagrams

This is something Quizlet rolled out awhile ago and I thought it looked intriguing but haven’t used it yet. My first thought was that it’d be good for learning vocab to things like parts of the body or food. Here’s the genius twist: stories. Use the diagrams for stories!

Why did I never think of this? I made a *very rough* first go of this with the Spanish Lottery commercial “22 otra vez”. You can see that here. I made a few key errors by putting more than one dot on each picture. This caused problems when we used it for a Quizlet Live (Yes you can play Quizlet Live with diagrams and it’s awesome!). It was also a rush job because I needed it for the next day.

The catch is that with the free version of Quizlet you only get eight points marked on a diagram. I wanted more so I upgraded and paid for Quizlet. This gave me a lot more freedom with diagrams. I think you could still get a fair amount of mileage out of eight points on a diagram too.

Plans for use:

  • Match phrases from the story to the picture
  • Match character descriptions to their picture
  • Use it to work on putting a story in sequence
  • Study guide for assessments that match pictures to sentences
  • Incorporate student art into the diagrams
  • Student created formative assessment with either graphics I provide or their own art work
  • Many I’m sure yet to be discovered!

I like that when making diagrams you can use different shape to highlight the area so you can make rectangles, dots, or free form shapes which will be helpful if I want to highlight one part of a larger scene.

There you have it! My two new uses for Quizlet that I plan to take full advantage of this semester. Do you have any genius uses? Share below in the comments!
