Gimkit with a Twist

If you’re not familiar with Gimkit, we need to talk. Seriously, tweet at me or DM me on Instagram. If you ARE familiar with it, I think you’ll like this twist.

I originally saw this tweet from Sharon Pawlak and knew I had to try it.

Spanish 4 were my test subjects. They aren’t my biggest Gimkit fans so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Overall, it went great!

The Process
  1. Students logged in like normal but before starting, I explained the movement twist. This was huge because it meant students had to change their strategy and the students that don’t always do well, suddenly had a chance!
  2. Students start at their computer and I sporadically told them, in Spanish, to move. They would then move to the computer next to them.
  3. That’s it. So easy!
The Good

Most students were engaged and loved spending each other’s money or buying power ups for their friends. Icing people, and having someone else’s name pop up as the blame, was also fun! Getting kids up and moving is always a good thing!

The Not so Great

I had one student refuse to actually answer questions because he didn’t want to win for someone else’s account. I told him he had to so he purposely got them all wrong and drove the totals to $0. It definitely put a damper on the game in my second class. There always has to be one. BUT, it was only one.
When I do this again, I’ll give a disclaimer that if you do this, your computer is out and you get to hand write all the definitions or something.

Future Twists

My first class thought it would be fun to put add “Mafia” style twist. Before starting the game students would randomly draw roles such as “gifter” (main goal is to gift people money), “attacker” (job is to ice and sabotage people through power ups), “citizen” (normal player). I’m not sure what other jobs I’ll come up with but it seems like a fun future twist!

What do you think? Have you tried this twist? Do you have others? Share below!
