Canvas and Google Integration

Many teachers are moving from Google Classroom to Canvas this year and lamenting the loss of everything they’ve created in Google. Fear not! Canvas integrates beautifully with Google suite products! Here are three ways to get your Google resources (docs, slides, sheets, etc) into Canvas.

Link It

This is the sharing method many are familiar with. Get your share link from Google (be sure to set viewer/editing/copy permissions correctly) and paste the link in Canvas using the External Link feature in Modules or Pages rich text editor. Easy-peasy

Embed It

This way is a bit more techy but you can do it! When your Google item (doc/slides/etc) is open, go to File > Publish to web. Choose “Embed” and publish. Copy the embed code that starts with “iframe”. Go back to your Canvas rich text editor on a page and paste in the code. Voila!

Use The External Tool Feature

You can add Google to Canvas as an App in settings and use it as an external tool in Pages, Assignments, and Modules (and more but those are the places I use it). Choose “External Tool”, select Google, and then find your file.
